Project Reach 1950 USS Norton Sound

Published 1950

Universal newsreel from 1950, with the original description from Universal:

AT SEA A rocket salute to July Fourth. From the deck of the USS Norton Sound, a Viking rocket takes off and climbs more than 100 miles into the sky. Spectacular salute to independence.

This event actually took place on May 11/12 1950 and shows the Viking 4 rocket as it's launched to a (then record) altitude of 106.4 miles as part of Project Reach. It carried a ~500 pound scientific instrument package that provided data on cosmic rays.

The audio track is absent unfortunately.
